The 74th winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 12th September 1849 over the 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was The Flying Dutchman, a brown colt by Bay Middleton out of Barbelle, owned by Lord Eglinton, trained at Spigot Lodge, Middleham by John Fobert and ridden by Charles Marlow. The winning time was 3 minutes 20 seconds and a field of 10 runners contested the race, although there were 140 subscriptions of 50 Sovereigns each. The value to the winner was £3,330 (Equivalent to £363,000 in 2017)
